Lead to Win Award

A People and Performance award entry from Deutsche Telekom Services Europe GmbH for the The Employee Experience category

Lead to Win Award

Deutsche Telekom has launched its strategy to become leading European telecommunications provider. This ambition is manifested in Lead to Win (L2W), the newly implemented leadership culture. Three new leadership principles describe these challenges: Collaborate, Innovate, Empower to Perform. They are keystones of the leadership which will support to lead Telekom to the digital age. This new culture of leading is an integral part of the HR strategy. L2W consists following elements: Short -Term / Long -Term Incentive Plan, Share Matching Plan and L2Win-Award. The L2W-Award was implemented with the aim to honor outstanding efforts and results of teams worldwide.

Lead to Win -Award

The L2W-Award was a great international success which helped to develop a new intercultural understanding, a new level of engagement and collaboration worldwide and to foster the corporate feeling. This was the first Group-wide award which was created with the aim to reach all potential 225.000 employees and all project teams worldwide.

Initial situation leading to the creation of the project

Deutsche Telekom’s (DT) corporate strategy is to become the leading EU Telco. CEO, Timotheus Höttges, laid out the strategic vision: “We are a trusted companion in an increasingly complex digital world. Making life easier for people and enriching it for the long term is the very essence of what we do.” To reach this goal the “Lead to Win (L2W)” management culture was established which consists of three Leadership Principles; collaborate, innovate and empower to perform. To strengthen strategy we invented the L2W-Award with the aim to honor outstanding efforts and team results cross segments worldwide.

Objectives of the project

Our aim was to make projects and team performances visible, transparent and strengthen the international collaboration. This is exactly that DT needs and would like to continue. The business is beyond borders that’s why employees are also encouraged to think, work and act beyond borders.

Strategic considerations involved in the project

One of the most innovative issue was that DT awarded teams in which the bold decision to terminate a project was taken jointly as a team. The first call for the award had been made by the CHRO to all potential 225.000 employees which shows also the importance of it. The teams could win up to 30.000 EUR for a team event. L2W-Award was also the first award which was presented in the Telekom Management Team Meeting (TMTM) which is the annual meeting for top managers of DT with more than 1000 participants from all countries. Which confirmed once again the importance of the award.

Implementation of the project

After the registration period, a team of 70 experts from different functional areas, segments and countries assessed the submissions. Using defined criteria, the expert committee made a ranking by category. The first six suggestions in each category were included in a shortlist. The final decision was made by the Board. The highlight was the award ceremony at the TMTM.

Results

The impact on the organization was great that shows the number of the applications. 355 teams from 123 subsidiaries out of 17 countries took part.

Suplement Information on the impact:

* 355 teams were in the race for the Group’s second Lead to Win Awards – in three categories: Innovation, Collaboration, Taking responsibility and acting boldly.

* A panel of 70 experts from all over the Group have been busily assessing the submissions for the Lead to Win Awards.

* It is a spirit you can feel but hardly explain. The Deutsche Telekom Group is changing. There are no borders for international collaboration anymore! We are heading for ONE global goal – ALLTOGETHER – we are not looking at our own country business any more, which was the case over decades! We are a trusted companion in an increasingly complex digital world – at home and at work, anyplace, anytime.

We are using the knowledge-power of every single participating country and staff member. We have already broaden our international networking and are merging to internationally acting teams, entering national team meetings as normal. We learn so much from another and are going to be well prepared to become the leading European telecommunications provider. We come up with leading European solutions making life easier for people and enriching it for the long term (see our film on collaborations).

The award ceremony has been broadcasted live in all participating countries with great acceptance. Many teams are waiting for the next annual award competition to start.

Innovation is to be found in every aspect of the Lead to Win Award – at first because it was the very first time we implemented this award with a strong focus on internationally rolled out/brought through projects in internationally acting teams. Our participating leadership-teams show how international projects have been successfully pushed forward with regards to collaboration, innovation and taking responsibility and acting boldy. These have also been the categories for our European L2W Award.

DT proclaimed this award to honor, to appreciate and to respect outstanding achievements for the company.

We have learned from this initiative that it is very important to strengthen out how important digitalization and its environmental methods of international collaboration has become to push topics and projects successfully and globally forward in a “big way”. And how much it needs to be honored and filled with confidence to leave well-trodden paths.

Therefore we will continue our Lead to Win Project in the future to maintain being a competitive and innovation leader in telecommunications.
