Talk Title: OMV employees – face to the public and sustainability implementation drivers
Category: Employee Engagement (People & Performance)
Sector:  Utilities
OVERVIEW
OMV Employees’ Engagement on sustainability is a highly strategic and innovative approach to integrate sustainability into the employee’s journey. It aims at creating passion, commitment and engagement through a common vision.

OMV group-wide program comprises activities in more than 30 countries world-wide. It uses synergies with performance, training and development programs and introduces innovative approaches, such as gamification and project creation through leaders and talents.

Initiatives have to be skills-based and need to provide high impact for beneficiaries AND OMV as well as to create engagement and ambassadorship. Sustainability becomes the responsibility and passion of each and every employee.

IMPACT
OMV uses different pillars to provide meaning and pride in an industry often seen very critically with regard to social and environmental responsibility:

– Integration in talent and leadership development to support career advancement and preparation for future roles (“Everybody who wants to make a career at OMV has to take responsibility for sustainability.”)

– Individual targets in MbO (create ownership, passion, meaning and pride)

– Volunteering and mentoring to support a common vision creating win-win for OMV, communities and environment (business partner and employer of choice)

– Gamification to reach out to all 25,500 employees (connect to company strategy)

INNOVATION
OMV’s program is unique compared to industry peers, but also to best in class companies with regard to sustainability engagement. No green washing and campaigning. We really mean it!

– Integrated in OMV career development and performance management

– Supporting initiatives of high importance for long-term sustainability

– High-impact and skills-based with strong leadership commitment and involvement

– Strongly monitored to support educational aspect and high leverage

– Top-down and bottom-up approach motivating self-initiative, raising commitment for achieving specific outcomes

– Dedicated time and resources for innovation and constant improvement (e.g. gamification)

INSPIRATION
OMV’s Employees’ Engagement for sustainability evolved out of the need to integrate a topic often perceived as soft and more a nice-to-have than a must-have. A highly strategic and fully embedded approach was used to overcome challenges such as:

– How to provide meaningful activities and constantly improve?

– How to raise mutual understanding and common vision in an industrial environment?

– How to reach out to more than 25.000 employees (partly in remote areas) and actively involve them?

– How to create tension in the process and raise curiosity?

– How to develop state-of-the-art tools for different target groups?
