Sainsbury’s Triple Zero Stores concept – Carbon, Water and Waste
How to unify sustainability concepts in two Sainsbury’s stores
Subcategory: Sustainability & the Environment
Overview
• Sainsbury’s 2020 Sustainability Plan has stretching targets covering all aspects of the business, to achieve sustainable and environmental measures through to 2020.
• This year we have opened our ‘Triple Zero’ stores at Weymouth and Leicester. The purpose to create a built environment which combines Zero Waste to Landfill, Zero Water impact and Zero operational Carbon.
• This forms part of an ongoing investment by the business every year through to 2020 – showing commitment and leadership in all areas of the business.

Impact
• We believe our five core values, and our commitment towards our 20×20 sustainability plan is the key to the long term sustainability of our business. They provide opportunities for us to differentiate ourselves with customers, suppliers, colleagues and stakeholders.
• Since 2007, we have invested in new renewable energy technologies (achieving internal financial hurdle rates) which reduce our ABSOLUTE carbon emissions.
• This year we have opened our ‘Triple Zero’ stores at Weymouth and Leicester. The purpose to create a built environment which combines Zero Waste to Landfill, Zero Water impact and Zero operational Carbon.
Innovation
• Our Absolute carbon emissions continue to drop, despite space growing by 32% since 2005/06.
• Zero Carbon
o We take main gas, closing the loop by buying the equivalent zero carbon biogas from our anaerobic digestion facilities and injecting into the grid.
• Zero Water
o 70% of our water demand is achieved through water management; the remaining 30% is achieved through investing in community water saving initiatives.
• Zero Waste
o None of our operational waste goes to landfill.
• World’s first PV Petrol Stations (PFS)
o We have installed translucent photovoltaic panels, generating 25% of the PFS energy.[/one_half_last]
Insight
• Supporting and up skilling contractors and Facilities Management due to :-
o Need for “right first time”, at pace
o increasing sophistication of initiatives
o with consequences for maintaining narrower tolerances
• Further investment in energy efficiency monitoring, supporting weekly reviews that ensure measures are effective at individual store level.
• Helping suppliers and contractors new to retail:-
o work with minimal disruption to customers and colleagues
o Supporting innovative companies to integrate their concepts e.g. helping the PV designer to work with the incumbent PFS canopy installer, to create a design which meets current specifications.
Inspiration
The strategy behind the 2 ‘Triple Zero’ stores is to show how you can apply key critical sustainable measures of Carbon, Water and Waste and create a replicable operating model.
• The stores not only create significant quantifiable reductions in each of these areas, but provide a focal point within businesses to look at how they can apply the same ideas.
• It provides an opportunity for customers and colleagues to be engaged and inspired by sustainable initiatives.
• The changes made to the built environment at the stores have been created with no impact on Capital and Revenue models.[/one_half_last]
